10 Most Surprising Places to Find Petroleum

The reason we chose to may candles from soy was because of the toxic fumes given off by "regular" candles which are made from paraffin; however I had no idea (or just didn't think about it) how many other everyday items are made with paraffin (petroleum).

By Rachel Cernansky, Planet Green

About one quarter of the oil consumed in this country is used for industrial purposes. Plastic production is the most obvious example, as awareness grows of the harm plastic does to the earth and people shun the material when they can.

But oil has permeated more of our lives than most people realize. Here, the most surprising places you’ll find oil, in some form, as a key ingredient:

1. Chewing gum

It lasts as long as it does for a reason–just about all brands on store shelves today use petroleum-based polymers. (Unless you find, say, Chicza’s organic rainforest gum, but I haven’t seen it at any 7-Eleven lately.) In fact, Goodyear–the tire and rubber company–supplies Wrigley’s with much of its gum base.

2. Hair dye

As if the toxic chemicals in hair dye weren’t enough reason to avoid coloring your hair. Try finding more natural alternatives, or just go au naturale.

3. Asphalt

Also known as bitumen, the material used to resurface roads (as well as in roofing materials) is an oil-based hydrocarbon. Meaning: if you noticed that road construction slowed down in your area at all in the last year, rising oil costs may well have been the reason.

4. Crayons

The main ingredient is paraffin wax, a petroleum product also used in most candles.

5. Ink

Ever wonder why so many companies with an eco-conscience tout their use of soy-based ink?

6. Pantyhose

…and all other nylon products. All petroleum-based.

7, 8, 9, 10…Ok, there’s going to be more than 10 items on this list

Heart Valves. Pillows. Aspirin. Ammonia. Toothpaste. Toothbrushes. Guitar strings. Shoe polish. Tape. Rubbing Alcohol. Vitamin capsules. Solvents. Caulking. Insecticides. Deodorant. Glue.

The wax layer of the packaging your frozen food comes in. (And, of course, the fertilizers that farmers used to grow much of that food.)

Given the ubiquity of oil, it’s not an easy thing to get away from, no matter how much bike-riding and food-growing we do for ourselves. (Though both of things are a great start…keep ‘em up!) But, like other addictions, we got ourselves hooked, and with serious effort and dedication, we can get ourselves unhooked.

Join the oil detox and start weaning yourself today.

Start your Journey to Joy!

The great thing about social networking is that you meet people that you wouldn't normally meet in your everyday life. I have developed friendships with many interesting and unique individuals through Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.

One of the greatest treasures of my life is a new friend named, Bill Bruner, who has helped me overcome fear, depression, and many other things which I won't bore you with! Bill writes a daily blog about the Journey to Joy and has just started his own YouTube channel which posts a weekly video.

Bill is honest, thoughtful and thought provoking. I encourage each of you to visit his blog and/or YouTube channel in order to help bring more love and joy into your life. Enjoy!

You don't need any gimmicks!?

These are Baby Food Jars?

With the cool days upon us I find myself looking for interesting ways to spend my down time (I'm not much of a TV watcher). I was recently browsing through Natural Home Magazine and found this fabulous project. This chandelier is crafted from humble materials. Aside from a few nuts and bolts, everything was either salvaged or recycled. This is my kind of project! They used votive candles; however I would use Sally Lee tealight candles which come in an acrylic (and fully recyclable cup).

This chandelier has all the charm of medieval ironwork—but it comes from the recycling bin. Used baby-food jars, a few yards of twisted wire, a couple repurposed barrel hoops and a length of rusty chain are all it takes to spark images of exotic locales. Powered by votive candles, the chandelier crackles with energy without drawing a single watt.

Giving Back Feels Great!

Someone recently asked us what the best thing was about being in business for ourselves...hmmmm...so many choices. After a quick thought we exclaimed that being able to help society and be involved with organizations that do good in the world is by far the best thing!

As you may all ready know, Sally Lee, donates 10% of their net profits to three worthwhile organizations each year: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The American Lung Society as well as Habitat for Humanity. We didn't just select these organizations at random. "Sally" passed away from Leukemia and "Lee" from Lung Cancer so the work they do are very personal to us. We have personally been financial supporters of Habitat for many years so it was natural to include them as we really believe in the work they do.

David & I recently donated 300 candles to The Moyer Foundation, which was founded by Major League Baseball All-Star pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen. Funds raised at this latest event benefit the Foundation's Campaign for Kids, statewide and national campaign to support the expansion of Camp Erin-bereavement camps for children who are grieving the loss of a family member or friend. You might think, "Gee, that's nice," but it is so much more. The love that we put into those candles made us feel so good, content, humbled and proud.

Giving to others really pays...in spirit, in love, in joy. The rewards are ten-fold over what it may have cost in money, time or product. We love helping other businesses/people and many don't understand the generosity - it's simple - it feeds our spirit to help others. Period.

What things can you do to help someone today?

Use Nature to Decorate for Thanksgiving

Bed of Leaves

One beautiful pumpkin resting on a bed of leaves is simple and organic.

Scale this idea up or down as space allows: a tall pumpkin would look lovely with just a handful of leaves at the base.

Magnolia and Pinecones

Wide bowls (or even trays or platters) can make centerpiece creation simple. Line the bottom with greenery, then fill with large items such as pinecones or ornaments.

Finally, garnish with a different texture. We used magnolia leaves, golden pinecones, matte gold ornaments, and a sprinkling of red berries.

Fall Fruits

A pyramid of fall fruits and miniature squash plated on a birch-log pedestal is a simple but beautiful centerpiece.

Do you have some easy & inexpensive decorating tips? We'd love for you to share them!
